Welcome to the information Web-site of the Centre of Distance Education of the Catholic University of Mozambique.

History

The CED has been initiated in 2003, as a result of the start of the first distance education project of the UCM. The main office of the centre was located at the Faculty of Medicine, and only one person was running the centre. In 2004 the centre got a dependence in Pemba, five persons work for the centre.

Mission

The main goal for the centre is to support faculties within the UCM, and other institutions in the country with distance education in Mozambique. Distance education will create new opportunities for the people of Mozambique. It will give them a chance to study in the place where they live and work, with more flexibility in time and place.

Method of Teaching:  Distance learning

The method of teaching is often a blend of face-to-face teaching and distance education. The students can have lessons in their holidays, whereas the main part of the study is self-study, either at house or at work. An organised system of distributing materials and collecting students’ work has been set up: a 4-wheel drive car visits the study centres in the rural areas almost every week.

Courses

In October 2004, the CED had two courses running. Both are focused on general secondary education teachers, with several specialisations. In 4 years they will complete the course at the level of a Bachelor in Education. A course of this type will finish in the province of Niassa in December 2004 and will be followed with a new one. In Niassa, the UCM/CED collaborates with ESAM. The other course is in the province of Sofala, here with contribution of ESMABAMA. For Cabo Delgado province a new course for administrators working within the department of education will start in February. New courses in cooperation with our faculties will follow in time.

In October 2004 over 300 students were studying through the CED.
