Dr. Rafael Baciano Sapato, Ph.D.

Vice-Rector for Pastoral and Extension Matters at UCM
Dr. Rafael B. Sapato was born on August 10, 1966 in the district of Mecanhelas, Niassa province (Mozambique). He did his primary and secondary school studies in Mepanhira-Mecanhelas, Lichinga and completed his Ordinary Level studies in Nampula, in 1986. From 1987 to 1988 he attended the Propaedeutic Seminary of Bom Pastor in Beira, and from 1989 to 1991, he hid his Philosophical studies at St. Augustine Major Seminary, in Matola. From 1992 to 1995 he studied Theology at St. Pius X Major Seminary in Maputo. From 1998 to 2003 he hid special Studies leading into a Ph.D. in dogmatic theology at the Pontifical Urbanian University, in Rome.

He was Director of the Pastoral Secretariat Coordination, as well as he was also in charge of the Media and Director of the Bulletin owned by the Diocese of Lichinga. In 1996 he was designated to be in charge of the finances of the Diocesan Priests Coordination in Northern Mozambique (COPREDINO), and from 2003 to 2004, he was Academic Advisor at Pius X Inter-Diocesan Theological Seminary in Maputo, where, later on, from 2005 to 2010 he served as Rector of the same Seminary.

From 2010 until today, he is a member of the African Theologians’ Association (ATA), based in Abidjan (Ivory Coast), and from January 2012 until today, he is a member of the Executive Committee for the same Association. In 2013 he was appointed Theological Advisor for the Liturgy and Culture’s Episcopal Commission in Mozambique. In January 2014, he was appointed Main chaplain for the Catholic University of Mozambique, and in November 2015, he was appointed Vice-Rector of the Pastoral and Extension Matters at the Catholic University of University of Mozambique, a post he holds until today.
