Against Sexual Harassment

HIV / AIDS must be understood and addressed within a social context in which people live. This includes understanding and addressing issues related to gender, sexual violence against women and children, as well as the sexual values imbibed in them. Among the strategies for preventing the spread of HIV / AIDS on campus, UCM has taken action against sexual harassment and abuse and defined in a document entitled “Política sobre o Assédio Sexual, or rather, "Sexual Harassment Policy".
In this document, the Catholic University of Mozambique takes at heart its commitment to “creating and maintaining a community in which students, teachers, administrators, employees and other members of the academic community can work and live together in an environment that is free from harassment, exploitation, intimidation and discrimination"[1]. With this commitment, the University makes it clear that sexual harassment is unacceptable and that it will not tolerate any attitude developed along these lines.
The "Sexual Harassment Policy" aims to making the university community aware of this problem, as well as it aims to providing information on how to act in circumstances in which this occurs. This document also presents the measures that the University will take in situations in which any member of the academic community is involved in situations of sexual harassment.
The document considers Sexual Harassment as "any kind of unwanted sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other physical or verbal sexual conduct that is intended to interfere with the academic development and/or create an offensive and intimidating environment in the university. In this regard, the document divides sexual harassment into four basic types, which are the following: verbal, physical, visual and sexual favors.
UCM Sexual Harassment Policy includes a section on "Sexual Harassment Myths" and the "Procedure" that encourages the academic community members to report all incidents related to sexual harassment that they may come across, be it incidents that have occurred to them or ones that they may witness. The institution also ensures a rigorous, impartial, and fair monitoring process, as well as it clearly defines the disciplinary measures to be taken.
To ensure an easy and effective implementation of this document, the institution entrusted this responsibility to HIV/AIDS focal points of each and every faculty. This work is accomplished through a combined work done with chaplains and counselors appointed by the Rector to work as consulters in addressing such matters.
